The Ilyushin IL-2 "Sturmovik" was a revolutionary aircraft for its time.  It was heavily armored survive while attacking German tank columns, yet was maneuverable enough to hold its own in air to air combat.  It even performed as a interceptor.   This aircraft is the prototype for the modern fighter bomber.  The IL-2 in combination with its subsequent modification the IL-10 holds the distinction as the most produced piloted aircraft in history with a total of 42,330 manufactured. 

Russian ground forces held the IL-2 in high regard as it played a critical role in ground support on Russia's Bloody Eastern Front receiving the highest complements from Russian ground troops, receiving the nickname "Flying Tank, or "Flying Infantryman". After the war the IL-2 was widely deployed throughout eastern bloc nations serving in the Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, and Yugoslav, and even Mongolian air forces.
